King Asa’s Folly

King Asa won a battle against an army of one million from the south because he relied on the Lord. Some years later however he didn’t call on God but on the king of Syria to deliver him in time of war. He trusted not in the Lord but in his ability to bribe the king in Damascus to act in his defense. For this reason, the Lord chastised him and told him he would have wars for the remainder of his life. Unfortunately, Asa didn’t learn the lesson. He became diseased in his feet and he died because once again he didn’t look to God rather he leaned to the physicians.

What is the lesson? It’s a problem when we look to man for what we should look to the Lord for. Is it wrong to get help or go to the doctor? No, but when our heart is more focused on what others can do rather than trusting God – it could spell misfortune. Always remember – external dependencies are idolatry. What you allow to come between you and God will be removed, sometimes with very unfortunate results.
