A few years ago, the Lord told me that He was “Bringing us to rest on the threshing floor of His purpose.” This took place in a dream, and it woke me up sitting straight up in bed, knowing I had heard from heaven but frankly not realizing or understanding what this meant. What does the idea of “threshing” speak to us from scripture? In the Bible, threshing has both a literal and a symbolic meaning.
Literal Meaning:
Threshing was an agricultural process used to separate the grain from the straw and chaff. Farmers would spread the harvested grain on a hard surface, called a threshing floor, and then use various methods to loosen the edible part of the grain. These methods included:
- Beating with sticks or flails: This was a common method for smaller quantities of grain or more fragile types. (Judges 6:11, Ruth 2:17, Isaiah 28:27)
- Using animals: Oxen or donkeys would be driven over the grain, pulling a heavy sledge or board with sharp stones embedded in it to crush the stalks. (Deuteronomy 25:4, 1 Corinthians 9:9)
- Treading with the feet: People would sometimes tread on the grain to separate it. (Hosea 10:11)
After threshing, the grain was winnowed, and the wind carried away the lighter chaff, leaving the heavier grain behind.
Symbolic Meaning:
The process of threshing is often used in the Bible as a metaphor for:
- God’s judgment: Just as the threshing process separates the valuable grain from the worthless chaff, God’s judgment separates the righteous from the wicked. (Isaiah 28:27-28, Jeremiah 51:33, Matthew 3:12)
