The prophetic gifts and the office of the prophet are prominent themes in Christian tradition. Many Christians today limit their understanding of prophecy to what they see on the surface, but it is more than that. The prophetic is a tool that God has given us to help us prosper. In 2 Chronicles 20:20, it is written that we must believe in the Lord our God to be established and believe in His prophets to prosper. Thus, accepting the prophetic’s place in our lives could secure our present and launch us into our destiny.
The Practice of the prophetic involves tearing down wrong thinking, rooting out unbelief, pulling down lies of the enemy, destroying doubt, and throwing down illegitimate authority so that we can be built up as saints and have the seed of Christ planted in us, which is the hope of Glory, (1 Cor. 14:3; Col. 1:26). Jeremiah 1:5, 9-10, highlights the personal application of the prophetic. It shows that God made prophetic declarations concerning our lives before we were formed in our mother’s womb. We have to accept the prophetic word spoken over us and move in obedience.
The apostle Paul instructs Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:18 to use prophetic words spoken over him to fight his battles. As we put on the Armour of God, we must not forget to pick up the tool of prophecy; it is a weapon we should not be without. (1 Thess. 5:20). We should not put Prophecy on a shelf and wait for it to come to pass. Instead, we are to war with it against the contrary circumstances of our lives, as Graham Cooke, a renowned Christian speaker, emphasizes in his teachings. We are to war against our circumstances with the weight of the prophetic declarations that have been spoken over us. In doing this, it helps us to tap into its power to change things around us.
The Principles of the prophetic involve confirming you in the faith and launching you into your destiny. Paul understood the need to speak not only the general word of God but also the prophetic word. He taught leaders to “confirm” believers by laying hands on them to impart prophetic gifting. Confirming people includes “leaning on” someone with the laying on of hands and prophecy. Prophecy brings understanding, knowledge that transcends natural limitations provokes faith in the hearers to fulfill their destiny in God, and destroys unbelief.
It’s crucial to understand that the gift of prophecy is not just for the elite few. In 1 Corinthians 14:31, it is written, “For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.” Moses said he wished that God would make all His people prophets. We must, therefore, learn to hear God’s voice and articulate it for others. The prophetic gift is not something to be locked up; it is part of who we are, and we should desire it.
In conclusion, the prophetic is not just a mere gift or some spiritual trade secret for a select few but one of God’s primary means of communicating to His people. It offers us a path to prosper and fulfill our purpose in life. We must accept the prophetic’s purpose and practice, apply it personally, trust in its power, understand its principles, and access the gift that dwells within us. As you trust the Lord and get close to His heart, you will hear His voice more clearly, and as you obey His divine leading, you will see the miraculous in your life.
