Today: [Joshua Chapter Twelve]: Moving from Conquest to Rulership. In this chapter we see that there are battles to win on the wilderness side of Jordan and battles to win on the Promised land side of the Jordan. This speaks of moving from your PROBLEM (the wilderness experience) to your POTENTIAL (the promised land experience). By studying the meanings of the names of these kings and where they were defeated we receive a prophetic inside into our own victory over the plan of the enemy to keep us from our breakthrough.
[Jos 12:1-24 KJV] 1 Now these [are] the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east: 2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, [and] ruled from Aroer, which [is] upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, [which is] the border of the children of Ammon; 3 And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, [even] the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah: 4 And the coast of Og king of Bashan, [which was] of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, 5 And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. 6 Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it [for] a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.
The first part of the chapter recounts the kings defeated on the wilderness side of the Jordan when the people were led by Moses. The remainder of the chapter recounts the kings that were defeated on the other side of the Jordan in the actual promised land when people were led by Joshua. Moses defeated two kings and possessed their kingdom, Joshua defeated 31 kings and possessed the kingdoms to parcel out as inheritance to the children of Israel. This is 33 kings in all corresponding to the number of years Jesus walked the earth before His death, burial and resurrection.
Every year you live is a spiritual territory to be defeated. Your life from beginning to end is both a sojourn through the wilderness and a conquest of possessing your inheritance in God. Our first battle is to defeat the kings on the wilderness side of Jordan. This speaks of the time in your life before you find Jesus as your savior and submit to Him as Lord. The wilderness deals with your problem the Promised land speaks of your potential. God wants you to move from your problem to your potential. There are two kings you must defeat in order to cross over in your life to the geography of God’s blessing and destiny for your life – Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan.
Sihon’s name means “warrior” and “to sweep away”. He was king of the Amorites. The word Amorite means “to say” or “a sayer”. Specifically it refers to what you say to yourself or your internal dialog. If you are going to come out of your personal wilderness you are going to have to master the internal dialog in your heart that continually speaks in opposition to the word of God. Why do you think God gave us a compendium of words that we call the bible or the gospel? It is to combat the continual narrative of unbelief that drones incessantly in our inner man. In Joshua 1:8 God told Joshua to meditate in the word day and night and in so doing Joshua would make his way prosperous and have good success. Notice the impetus was upon Joshua. It is an error for us to wait around on what God is going to do. He has already done what is necessary for your prosperity and success. You must act. You must pull down and silence the narrative of unbelief and establish the narrative of faith and trust in God through the inculcation the ingestion of God’s word in your inner man. Sihon’s name means “to sweep away, to destroy”. Jesus said this about words:
[Mat 12:37 KJV] 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
What you do with what God has said is much more powerful than what you are waiting on Him to do or say about what is going on in your life right now. Make a commitment to the narrative of promise God has given us in Christ. To this agrees the words of Paul:
[Phl 4:8 KJV] 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.
The other king you have to defeat on the wilderness side of Jordan is Og king of Bashan. Og’s name means “long necked”. This represents the willfulness of man. If you are going to move from your problem to your potential you are going to have to defeat your own willful nature. Og was king of Bashan. Bashan means fruitfulness. You might ask “where is my blessing?” or “Where is the promise of fruitfulness in my life?” The promise of God will be manifest in your life when you make the decisions that reconfigure your life from the ideology of unbelief to the ideology of faith. God can deal with anything in your life accept your refusal to make a decision.
Finally notice on the wilderness side of Jordan Moses is in charge in on the Promised Land side of Jordan Joshua (our Jesus) is in charge. You might ask “when am I in charge?” The answer is NEVER. Moses represents the Law. The law was given to bring us to Christ just as Moses was appointed to bring the people to their Joshua. The law is there to bring your words and your will to a place of submission, to your personal Jordan experiences so you can exit the live defined by problems and struggle and enter into your personal promised land under the leadership of your Joshua who is Jesus.
7 And these [are] the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel [for] a possession according to their divisions; 8 In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country; the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: 9 The king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which [is] beside Bethel, one; 10 The king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; 11 The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; 12 The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one; 13 The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 The king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one; 17 The king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one; 18 The king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; 19 The king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one; 20 The king of Shimronmeron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; 21 The king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; 22 The king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam of Carmel, one; 23 The king of Dor in the coast of Dor, one; the king of the nations of Gilgal, one; 24 The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.
There were 31 kings defeated on the Promised Land side of Jordan. The name of God “El” has a numeric value of 31. He is our ELshaddai, our Elohim. 31 is also the number representing the RULE of God in your life when you step into your role as King and Priest unto God as Josiah did who ruled for 31 years. Moses name occurs in 31 books of the bible and Rebekah (as a type of the bride of Christ) appears 31 times in the scriptures.
When you move out of your wilderness and into your Canaan you are moving from your problem to your potential. This will happen when you defeat the principalities of your words (the internal dialog of unbelief) and your will (that holds the stronghold of your fruitfulness). Then moving into your promised land there are yet seven principalities and strongholds to conquer:
Hittites:
(Fear, Terror)
Girgashites:
(Clay people, Sinful Flesh)
Amorites:
(Fast talkers, Internal Dialog of Unbelief)
Canaanites:
(Subjection, Zealousness to Sin)
Perizzites:
(Unwalled village, a villager, one of the crowd, herd mentality, to go with the crowd)
Hivites:
(Bloodline characteristics, Familial strongholds, Generational Sins)
Jebusite:
(Trodden down, rejection, opinions of men, depression).
If you study the narrative you will find all these nations were destroy except the Jebusites who stubbornly held on to Mount Zion until they were driven off by Caleb who said “give me my mountain”. There is an old song that says “it’s a battlefield brother not a recreation room, it’s a fight and not a game, so run if you want to run if you will but I came here to stay…”
Jesus declared that He came that we might have life and life more abundantly. Paul called this the prize of the good fight of faith:
[1Ti 6:12 KJV] 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
The promise of God must be laid hold of in your life by your actions and your tenacious faith. The kingdom doesn’t come by observation Jesus said in Luke 17:20,21. You must DO something. You must become a participator moving toward those things that will only become yours after you commit to the course of obedience and risk with no possibility of turning back.
