Knowing God in Three Dimensions

Knowing God in Three Dimensions: Knowing God is the heart’s deepest desire and the soul’s ultimate quest. It is the very essence of eternal life. Jesus Himself declared, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3 KJV)

But how can we truly know God? This devotional explores three dimensions of knowing God, drawing upon the wisdom of the Scriptures.

Knowing God Through His Acts

Many people know God primarily through His acts. They witness His miraculous interventions, His power displayed in creation, and His judgments upon the wicked. Like the children of Israel who witnessed the parting of the Red Sea and the provision of manna in the wilderness, they see God’s hand at work in the world.

“He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.” (Psalm 103:7 KJV)

However, knowing God solely through His acts can be a limited understanding. It can lead to a faith that is dependent on outward signs and wonders, rather than a deep, abiding relationship with the Lord.

“And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land…” (Deuteronomy 29:2 KJV)

Knowing God Through His Ways

A deeper level of knowing God is to understand His ways. This is the dimension that Moses operated in. He not only witnessed God’s acts but also understood the principles and procedures by which God works. He knew God’s character, His justice, and His mercy.

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:” (Hebrews 8:10 KJV)

Knowing God’s ways allows us to walk in obedience and trust, even when we don’t see His hand at work in a visible way. It enables us to discern His will and to live a life that is pleasing to Him.

“They do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” (Hebrews 3:10 KJV)

Knowing God Personally

The ultimate dimension of knowing God is to know Him personally, intimately, as Father. This is the level of knowledge that Jesus had, and that He invites us to share in. It is a relationship of love, trust, and communion.

“All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.” (Matthew 11:27 KJV)

This intimate knowledge of God is not based on outward signs or intellectual understanding alone, but on a heart that is surrendered to Him and a spirit that is led by the Holy Ghost.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” (Romans 8:14 KJV)

Reflection and Review

In which dimension do you primarily know God? Do you rely on seeing His acts, understanding His ways, or experiencing Him personally?

The journey of knowing God is a lifelong pursuit. It is a process of drawing closer to Him, of deepening our understanding of His character and ways, and of surrendering our hearts to His transforming love.

Call to Action

Seek God diligently. “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13 KJV)
Study His Word. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
Obey His commands. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 KJV)
Pray without ceasing. “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV)
Yield to the Holy Spirit. “Be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18 KJV)

May we all press on in our pursuit of knowing God in all His fullness, that we might experience the abundant life He has promised.
