Hearing God in Times of Crisis
In 2 Chronicles 20:20, we find a powerful principle: “Believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” But what happens when there is no prophet immediately available? What do we do when a crisis demands immediate divine guidance?
The Accessibility of God’s Voice
The scriptures reveal that God desires to communicate with His children. He is not distant or silent.
- John 10:27: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
- Jeremiah 33:3: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
- Hebrews 4:16: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
These verses assure us that God’s voice is accessible to those who seek Him. We are not dependent on human intermediaries alone.
Demystifying Divine Revelation
The idea that hearing God’s voice is a “trade secret” is a misconception. The Bible encourages all believers to cultivate a personal relationship with the Lord and to discern His guidance.
- 1 Corinthians 2:12: “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”
- 1 John 2:27: “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”
The Holy Spirit, who dwells within every believer, is our guide and teacher. He illuminates the scriptures and speaks to our hearts.
Keys to Hearing God’s Voice
To hear God’s voice clearly, we must:
- Seek Him earnestly:
- Matthew 7:7: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
- Study His Word:
- Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.“
- Pray consistently:
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.”
- Cultivate a quiet heart:
- Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
- Obey His promptings:
- John 14:21: “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love5 him, and will manifest myself to him.“
Reflection and Review:
God’s desire is for us to have a personal and intimate relationship with Him. He speaks through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and the circumstances of our lives. By cultivating a heart that is open and receptive to His voice, we can experience His guidance and direction in every situation. Remember that the prophets are indeed valuable, but your direct access to God is the most valuable and readily available resource you have.
