Many people of faith believe in the power of prayer for healing. We’ve heard testimonies and maybe even experienced it ourselves, where prayer brings miraculous recovery. But what happens when we pray and don’t see the breakthrough we’re hoping for? Does that mean God isn’t listening? Is our faith lacking?
This is where we need to understand the difference between sickness and affliction as presented in the book of James. While both involve health challenges, they require different approaches.
[Jas 5:13-14 KJV] 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Sickness vs. Affliction:
- Sickness: Often acute and temporary, something that can potentially be healed through medical intervention or prayer. James instructs those who are sick to call upon the elders of the church for prayer.
- Affliction: Chronic conditions, often long-term and perhaps without a clear medical solution. James advises those who are afflicted to pray for themselves.
This distinction suggests that while God can bring miraculous healing, some conditions may be meant to be managed rather than eradicated. This doesn’t diminish the power of prayer, but it changes our focus. Instead of solely praying for complete healing, we can pray for strength, comfort, and guidance in managing the affliction.
The Power of Persistent Prayer:
Think of prayer like medicine. Just as we might take medication regularly to manage a chronic condition, we can use prayer as a spiritual regimen. Consistent, dedicated prayer can bring about subtle shifts and improvements over time, even if we don’t experience an instant miracle.
Practical Steps:
- Identify: Discern whether you’re dealing with a sickness or an affliction. If prayer and medical intervention haven’t brought healing, it might be an affliction.
- Pray: Develop a daily practice of prayer, speaking God’s word over your situation. Find scriptures that address healing and declare them over yourself.
- Persevere: Don’t give up! Just as with physical therapy, consistent spiritual “therapy” through prayer can bring gradual improvement and strength.
- Resources: Explore resources that can help you in your prayer journey. Books, recordings, and teachings by trusted faith leaders can provide guidance and encouragement.
Remember:
- God’s Word is Powerful: Believe in the authority of God’s promises, even when your circumstances seem to contradict them.
- The Holy Spirit is Your Teacher: Don’t let anyone tell you that God uses sickness or hardship as a teaching tool. The Holy Spirit is our constant guide and teacher.
- Small Beginnings Matter: Don’t despise the small steps you take in your faith journey. Every prayer, every declaration, every act of faith matters.
Even when faced with chronic conditions, we can find hope and strength through persistent prayer and a deep trust in God’s word.
