Should the Song of Solomon be removed from the canon of scripture?

Song of Songs 1:2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.

Have you ever read the Song of Solomon? It is very different from any other book in the Bible. It does not address us as prophetic literature; neither does it concern itself with the Law. On the surface, it is held to be an exchange of love letters between Solomon and Pharaoh’s daughter, who was his principal wife among all his other wives and concubines. It is unabashedly sensual, and the more one studies it, the deeper they blush at its imagery.

For hundreds of years, both Jewish and Christian theologians have rejected it as nothing more than ancient pornography. On the other hand, one first-century Rabbi proclaimed, “Blessed be that day that G-d gave this book to the Jewish people. If the books of the Bible are holy, then the Song of Solomon is the Holy of Holies!” Quite an endorsement. Origen, a first-century scholar, was so taken with the Song of Solomon that he wrote a ten-volume work expounding it, but have YOU ever read the Song of Solomon?

For me (and many others), the Song of Solomon is an allegory of Christ and the Church and serves as a companion in Scripture to Ephesians chapter 5. From an individual standpoint, it is a poem of love between the Bridegroom and the Bride, which is your human soul. By the Holy Spirit, God dwells within your human spirit, wooing you to come into His chamber and commune with Him in the most intimate way.

When I was making my mind up about this book, the first verse of the first chapter left me completely smitten. “Let Him kiss me with the kisses of his lips for thy love is better than wine…” What is that saying? The sentiment is this – “I want more than the Word that proceeds from His lips. I want intimacy with the lips that spoke the Word!” That is a deep calling to deep moment for me, how about you?

Jesus said that the Father seeks those who worship Him in spirit and truth. He isn’t looking for a one night stand or a cathartic, emotional experience. He only has eyes for you, and He desires you to only have eyes for Him. Open yourself up to the Lover of your soul today.
