Coach, Just Put Me in the Game!

Son, You Never Were My First Choice… NO PROBLEM!

Years ago in prayer, I made an observation to the Lord that He often brought me into situations that for one reason or another would be a ministry or business that someone else started and then left. I asked the Lord about this and He said “Son, you never were My first choice…” That didn’t hurt my feelings. I’d learned something about God’s contingency plans. Second place, Plan B in God is often WAY MORE of a BLESSING than Plan A!

Obstinate narcissism in a person will never accept something like this. They must go first, be first, have exactly what they think they want without any capacity for humility or quietness of spirit. Remember that God told Samuel that stubbornness is as idolatry. Saul couldn’t stand not being first and lost his throne. Jeroboam (Israel’s first northern king) couldn’t stand the people going to Jerusalem and lost his throne. Haman couldn’t stand Mordecai being promoted and died as a result. Listen – be willing to humble yourself to God’s way and God’s plan.

Esau was firstborn but God chose Jacob. Ammon was David’s firstborn but God chose Solomon, the TENTH in line for the throne and a son whose birth was touched with scandal because he was Bathsheba’s son. I told the Lord I would happily be Junior Varsity in the things of God – my heart’s cry then and now was simply “Coach – just put me in the game!” So, don’t be discouraged when you feel passed over – God saved the best for last and your portion will be forthcoming!
