Why Do the Prophets Today Get Into So Much Trouble?

The modern prophetic movement is in shambles. It has, unfortunately, been marred by its share of scandals and controversies. We’ve seen leaders fall from grace, make questionable pronouncements, and even cause significant harm to their followers. This begs the question: Why do so many who identify as prophets today seem to get into so much trouble?

One compelling argument points to a fundamental issue: not everyone who operates in what appears to be a prophetic manner is actually called to be a prophet. Just as there are distinctions within any profession or calling, the realm of prophecy is no different. A genuine prophetic calling is a specific and weighty mantle bestowed by God. It involves not only the ability to perceive spiritual realities but also a deep commitment to truth, accountability, and the character of Christ.

When individuals operate in this sphere without a true divine calling, they often rely on their own soulish abilities – their intellect, emotions, and natural inclinations. This can manifest in ways that bear a superficial resemblance to prophecy but lack the substance and integrity that come from the Holy Spirit. Much like psychics and clairvoyants tap into intuitive or even demonic realms, those without a genuine prophetic call can operate from a similar soulish place, leading to inaccurate predictions, self-serving pronouncements, and ultimately, significant trouble.

Examples of the Consequences

We see this play out in various ways:

  • Failed Prophecies: Individuals declare specific future events that simply do not come to pass, eroding trust and raising questions about the source of their pronouncements.
  • Manipulation and Control: Leaders misuse prophetic language to exert undue influence over their followers, often for personal gain or to maintain power.
  • Moral Failures: A lack of genuine spiritual grounding and accountability can lead to ethical lapses and scandals that damage the credibility of the entire prophetic movement.
  • Doctrinal Errors: Operating outside of a clear understanding of God’s Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit can result in the propagation of false teachings and distorted views of God.

The Crucial Need for Discernment

The solution lies in discernment, both for those who believe they are called to be prophets and for those who follow them.

For those who identify as prophets: There must be a willingness to honestly examine their own hearts and motivations. Are they truly submitted to God’s authority and the scrutiny of mature spiritual leaders? Do their lives bear the fruit of the Spirit? Are their prophecies consistent with the Word of God and marked by humility and love? The question, “Am I really called to this?” needs to be a constant and prayerful inquiry.

For those who follow prophetic voices: Blindly accepting every pronouncement can be dangerous. Believers must cultivate their own ability to discern the spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10) by knowing the Scriptures, praying for wisdom, and seeking counsel from godly mentors. Does the prophet’s life reflect Christ? Are their words edifying, encouraging, and comforting (1 Corinthians 14:3), or do they breed fear, division, and confusion?

Conclusion

The troubles plaguing some corners of the prophetic movement today are a serious matter. By acknowledging that not all who operate prophetically are genuinely called, we can begin to address the root of the problem. A renewed emphasis on authentic calling, rigorous self-examination, and Spirit-led discernment is crucial for the health and integrity of the prophetic voice in the church today. Only then can the true prophets of God rise up with clarity and power, bringing genuine guidance and blessing to the body of Christ.
