Where is God in the Nancy Guthrie Case?

Where was God at 1:47 a.m. February 1st in the Catalina foothills?

In the quiet hours of February 1st, a shadow fell over the Catalina Foothills. The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie—a mother, a grandmother, and a sister in Christ—has left her family in agony and a nation asking that ancient, guttural question: Where is God when darkness like this moves in? As we watch the grainy footage of a masked intruder and hear the desperate pleas of her children—Savannah, Annie, and Camron— the vast silence of the Arizona desert can feel hauntingly like the silence of Heaven. But as one who has spent decades seeking the prophetic heart of the Father, I tell you: God is not a bystander in the Tucson kidnapping.

A Precedent from the Past with a Personal Connection to FHM

Our God is a God who sees in the dark. In 1992, my late wife Kitty was prophetically led into another high-profile mystery: the case of the “Springfield Three.” During that time, the Lord revealed minute, startling details that Kitty shared with law enforcement.

To the utter astonishment of detectives, she provided:

  • Specific boat registration numbers.

  • Private phone numbers and residential addresses.

  • The exact locations of the bodies.

While these details were factual and accurate to the crime, they remained beyond the scope of “legal proof” at the time. Yet, the impact was eternal. As Kitty met with these hardened detectives, dive teams, and officers were moved to tears, confronted not just by data, but by the overwhelming testimony of God’s power and His specific love for them as investigators. Make no mistake—God is “all up in the middle” of this tragic situation involving Nancy Guthrie. Everything hidden will be brought to light, but perhaps not in the way the world expects.

God is not seeking fifteen minutes of fame. He is not looking for a headline. He is moving to bring ultimate glory to the name of His Son. Even in the Catalina Foothills, the Light is already outshining the shadow.

1. Where is God? He is in the “Residual Data” Recovered

We saw a glimpse of His providence when the FBI recovered “inaccessible” footage from backend servers—images that weren’t supposed to exist because there was no subscription. Prophetically, this is a sign. Nothing is hidden that will not be revealed. God is the God of the “residual data” of our lives. He sees the footprints in the washes of Pima County; He sees the DNA on the discarded glove. In the spirit, I sense a “frequency of exposure” increasing. The Lord is blowing upon the embers of this investigation, and the secrets of the dark are being forced into the light.

2. Where is God? He is in the Intercession of the Saints

Nancy didn’t just “go missing”; she was missed at church. The alert went out because a fellow believer noticed her absence from the gathering of the saints. God is present in the intercessory cry of the Body of Christ. He is in the prayers of the neighbors, placing roses at the tribute, and the thousands of intercessors across the globe. When the enemy seeks to isolate a lamb, the Shepherd uses the flock to sound the alarm. Your prayers are not hitting a brass ceiling; they are the very tracks the Holy Spirit is using to guide searchers through the thick brush of the desert.

3. Where is God? He is the Keeper of the Heartbeat

We know Nancy carries a pacemaker—a technology that monitors the very rhythm of life. While the app disconnected at 2:28 a.m., the Great Physician has never disconnected His gaze. To the family, the Lord says: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end of every heartbeat.” Even in the “Way of the Wilderness”—a place of trial and testing—He is the Manna and the Pillar of Fire. He is the God who found Hagar in the desert and Peter in the prison. He is not limited by a lack of medication or the physical fragility of 84 years.

What I Specifically Heard and a Prophetic Decree

When I woke up this morning the first thing I asked the Father was about this case in Arizona. What I heard was sobering. “Let your tongue cleave to the roof of your mouth…”  What does that mean? It’s very specific to me. What does it mean to you? I do know this – God never leaves us and He never forsakes us. Before this is all over God’s glory will be shown.

I decree that this will lead to a dead end for the enemy and a breakthrough for the Light of God’s Glory. We pray for the “essential goodness” that Savannah spoke of to be awakened even in the heart of the captor—that a spirit of conviction would become so heavy that they can no longer carry the weight of this sin.

Where is God? He is standing on the porch where the blood was found, weeping with the family. He is in the war room with the investigators, sharpening their intuition. And He is in the secret place where Nancy is, whispered into her spirit: “Fear not, for I am with you.”

Let us keep watch. The dawn is coming.
