If you don’t like what is in your life, change what is in your mouth and in your heart. Things are the way they are because of what you are doing and what you are saying. If you want something different, then do and say something different. Regurgitating the status quo through complaining and whining only produces more of the same in your life and future. It’s a fact that your words, whether they’re filled with faith or fear, shape your perception of the world. If you’re unhappy with your current situation, take action first and foremost by changing your words.
[Heb 11:3] Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Ah, that resonates deeply, doesn’t it? The notion that our very words hold the power to shape the landscape of our lives, painting it with hues of vibrant faith or somber fear. As followers of Christ, this isn’t just a self-help mantra; it’s a profound spiritual truth woven throughout the fabric of scripture.
Think about it: “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). What we consistently listen to, what we internalize, and ultimately, what we speak, cultivates the soil of our hearts. If we constantly dwell on anxieties, on worst-case scenarios, on the limitations we perceive, we are essentially watering seeds of fear. These seeds will inevitably sprout, casting shadows over our perspective and hindering our ability to see God’s abundant grace at work.
Conversely, when we intentionally saturate our minds and our speech with the promises of God, with declarations of His faithfulness, with affirmations of His power working in our lives, we are cultivating a garden of faith. These words become anchors in the storms, light posts in the darkness, and springs of living water when we feel parched.
Consider the countless times scripture emphasizes the power of our tongue. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love to talk will eat its fruit.” This isn’t a whimsical statement; it’s a profound reality. Our words are not mere air; they carry weight, they carry energy, and they shape our reality, both inwardly and outwardly.
When we find ourselves discontent, when the circumstances of our lives feel heavy or discouraging, the invitation isn’t to simply grit our teeth and bear it. The invitation is to examine the narrative we are speaking over our lives. Are we constantly voicing our doubts? Are we highlighting the obstacles more than the opportunities God presents? Are we speaking defeat before the battle even begins?
Changing what we are having often begins with changing what we are saying. This isn’t about positive thinking in a superficial sense; it’s about aligning our words with the truth of God’s Word. It’s about speaking life into dead situations, declaring healing over sickness, proclaiming breakthrough in the face of challenges, and affirming God’s unwavering love and provision.
This isn’t always easy. When faced with genuine hardship, our emotions can feel overwhelming, and negative words might feel like the only honest expression. However, even in those moments, we have a choice. We can choose to acknowledge the difficulty while simultaneously anchoring ourselves in the unwavering truth of God’s promises. We can lament, as the Psalms often do, yet still conclude with declarations of faith and trust.
So, if you find yourself in a place you don’t desire, take a moment to listen to the soundtrack of your thoughts and the echoes of your own voice. What narrative are you weaving? Is it one of limitation and fear, or one of possibility and faith in a God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)?
Let us be intentional about the words we speak. Let them be words that build up, encourage, and align us with the abundant life Christ came to give us. Let our tongues be instruments of faith, shaping a world around us that reflects the goodness and glory of our Heavenly Father. For truly, the power to change what we are having may very well reside in the courageous and consistent act of changing what we are saying.
May your words be filled with faith today.
Call to Action (5 Points):
- Reflect: Take some time today to journal about the words you’ve been speaking lately. Are they words of faith or fear?
- Repent: If you recognize a pattern of negative self-talk or fearful pronouncements, confess it to God and ask for His help to change.
- Replace: Intentionally replace negative words with positive affirmations of God’s truth and promises. Find scriptures that speak to your specific situation and declare them aloud.
- Renew: Renew your mind daily by immersing yourself in God’s Word. Listen to faith-filled sermons, read encouraging books, and surround yourself with people who speak life.
- Release: Speak words of faith over your life, your family, your future, and your circumstances. Don’t be afraid to boldly declare what God says is true, even if it contradicts what you see or feel.
