The Father says over your life today: “I’m Going to Show You How MONEY MOVES BY THE SPIRIT!”

In 2009, I felt compelled to leave my small town in mid-Missouri and drive to Springfield for a small group meeting at an acquaintance’s house. I didn’t know the person well, and I felt like an outsider. The atmosphere was tense, as Springfield wasn’t very open to prophetic ministry, and being a prophet, I knew I wasn’t among friends.

Despite the discomfort, we went. There were two ministers I’d never met before, and one of them, Mitch Clay, spoke a prophetic word over me that would completely change my financial life. This is what he said:

> “God is going to show you how money moves by the Spirit. Your life financially will not be about gathering resources for your own need but rather being a channel of finances out to the initiatives of the kingdom.”

This message came at a perfect time. Not long before, I was on the verge of homelessness. Looking back on my life, raising four children in an impoverished small town in Louisiana, I even had to rely on government assistance like food stamps to feed my family. Just as the Bible says Jesus was “acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3), I was intimately acquainted with poverty. When that word came, it not only improved my finances and ability to care for my family, but it also provoked a massive shift that brought about the “transfer of wealth” the scriptures speak of (Proverbs 13:22)—not for my own enrichment, but to fund the initiatives of the kingdom.

 The Importance of Caring for the Poor

The first thing I learned was this: when you take care of God’s business, He will take care of your business. And God’s first order of business in the area of supply is taking care of the poor. It surprises me when people come to me for counsel, complaining that they are generous tithers and givers, yet “it isn’t working!” In other words, the reciprocal blessing promised in scripture isn’t forthcoming. My follow-up question always reveals the problem:

“What are you doing for the poor?”

The answer is almost always the same: “The poor? I’m not going to give them my hard-earned money; all they’ll do is drink it up and waste it on themselves.”

This is a huge problem that keeps generous, tithing believers from seeing the financial increase they desire. After Mitch Clay prophesied to me about “money moving by the Spirit,” the first thing God spoke to me was this:

> “If you give of your surplus, I will keep you in surplus!”

What about you? Do you have a surplus? Even if you think you don’t – take another look, I’m sure you will find that you have surplus at some level. God wants you to have surplus and much more. But it begins not with tithing or giving to the kingdom, but in what you give to the poor. Did you know that the Levites received the tithes of the entire nation of ancient Israel (Numbers 18:21)? While most people have read scriptures about this, many don’t know that God then required the Levites to give what amounted to 15.6 percent of their income to the poor (Numbers 18:26-29)! In fact, one of the major reasons God allowed the nation to go into captivity years later was because they never consistently did this.

Are you in financial captivity? Here is your starting point. It’s good that you are tithing, giving, and supporting the kingdom, but realize that what you give to the poor activates the blessing on what you give to the kingdom. Not realizing this can make you feel as though you’re “putting money in a bag with holes in it” (Haggai 1:6), causing your generosity to the kingdom to become a source of resentment against giving, which is so common today. Let me tell you, there is no greater demonstration of faith or unbelief than is provoked through the issue of giving.

 Activating Financial Breakthrough

So, if you want something different (financially), you must do something different. As Jesus taught, “the kingdom doesn’t come with observation” (Luke 17:20). This means you must take action in the very area of your life where you need and desire change and breakthrough. This flies in the face of the deception that says, “I don’t give money, I give of my time.” That’s wrong thinking. Why? Because when God created the earth, He established a law that the “seed is in itself” (Genesis 1:11). This means whatever you plant in faithfulness to God, you will get back. You can’t plant corn and get rice; you can’t plant tomatoes and get cucumbers! If you need money, get into faith in that area of your life—even if it’s like the widow with her two mites (Luke 21:1-4), casting in all that you have—and I urge you to start by giving to the poor.

 Practical Steps to Giving

Which poor should you give to? The people around you. Don’t rush to benevolence institutions before seeking out the people in your life, your family, or your church who are in need. Why? Because you are looking for an individual breakthrough, and you must plant a seed that brings an individual breakthrough to others in need, even if their needs aren’t as great as your own.

Now, will giving to the poor bring the blessing? Not entirely. Yes, if you give of your surplus to the poor, God will keep you in surplus. However, the real, overwhelming flow of financial blessing comes from giving to the kingdom. You give of your surplus to the poor, and you give out of your deep poverty (like the widow with the two mites) to the kingdom. Even Bill Gates could give out of his “deep poverty” (or “penury,” as scripture reads, Luke 21:4) if he would. In my own life, I know I’ve given out of my deep poverty when I give a gift that makes me think, “Wow, I sure hope that was according to God’s leading, because if it isn’t, I’m in trouble!”

One of the most powerful examples of this was right before COVID broke out. God spoke to me to give a massive gift, far more than I had ever given, to a missionary ministry. Immediately after, COVID hit, and as a ministry that depends on discretionary income from donations, I fully expected we were going to suffer. We were preparing to take pay cuts and enact austerity measures so we could care for our staff for as long as possible. But guess what? In the aftermath of that massive gift and with the economy completely shut down by COVID, our ministry’s income doubled in 2020!

Listen—God wants you to get into faith in the area of finances so you, too, can experience what happens when “money moves by the Spirit” in your life. This is how you opt in and activate the “transfer of wealth” in the end times, instead of just sitting around, waiting and wondering when it’s going to come your way. Money in your life is all about spiritual warfare when you understand, accept, and commit to seeing “money move by the Spirit.”

First, go out and start identifying any surplus you have. Cars, clothes, appliances—whatever you own that you don’t really need or can live without, give it to the poor. Do it personally if you can find someone in need, and if not, give it institutionally to a local benevolent organization. This sets you up for what comes next: when you go from giving of your surplus to giving out of your deep poverty—the gift that makes you think, “I hope that’s God because if it isn’t, I’m in trouble.”

The area of finances is one area where I’ve seen massive and transformative breakthrough and sustenance for years now. I want you to have the same blessing. Are you ready? God told a great prophet in the 1950s that “Nothing will stand before you—not even cancer—if you can get the people to believe.” I’m here to make the effort to get you out of unbelief and into faith concerning your financial condition. What God did in my life, He will do in yours—if you will act.

Start by giving to the poor and keep giving to the poor until all your surplus is gone. Then, at the same time, give to the kingdom. Give a gift that exceeds what you normally give, or perhaps more than you’ve ever given before. That’s where Father’s Heart Ministry comes in.
