The Power of a Trembling Heart:
In a world often clamoring for attention and demanding its own way, there’s a riveting and profound reassessment in our heart regarding those referenced in scripture who “tremble at God’s word.” This isn’t a fear that paralyzes, but a deep reverence, a holy respect for the power and authority of the Almighty.
Isaiah 66:2: “For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”
Think about it: when we truly grasp the holiness of God and the weight of His words, our natural response should be one of humility and awe. As Isaiah 66:2 reminds us, God looks to the one who is poor in spirit and trembles at His word. This trembling signifies a heart that is open to His leading, willing to obey His commands, and sensitive to His correction.
The examples in Scripture are powerful. Ezra and those with him trembled at their people’s transgression, demonstrating a deep understanding of God’s holiness and the consequences of sin. Their trembling wasn’t just an emotional response; it led to action, repentance, and a renewed commitment to God’s law.
Psalm 119:120: “My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.”
Psalm 119, a love letter to God’s Word, repeatedly speaks of its impact. Even amidst persecution, the Psalmist stood in awe of God’s Word (Psalm 119:161), and his very flesh trembled at the fear of the Lord and His judgments (Psalm 119:120). This wasn’t a cowering fear but a recognition of God’s supreme authority and righteous character.
Today, let us cultivate a heart that trembles at God’s Word. Let it not be a casual acquaintance, but a source of deep reverence and obedience. When we approach Scripture with humility and a willingness to be changed by it, we open ourselves to God’s favor and experience the transformative power of His truth.
Reflection Questions:
- Do I approach God’s Word with a sense of reverence and awe? What examples can you point to in your life whereby you can demonstrate your fear of God and reverence for His holiness?
- Are there areas in my life where I need to be more sensitive to God’s commands?
- How can I cultivate a “trembling heart” that leads to greater obedience and devotion?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Word, a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Forgive us for the times we have treated it lightly or disregarded its truth. Grant us a heart that is humble and contrite, a heart that trembles at Your Word. May this reverence lead us to deeper obedience, greater understanding, and a closer walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
