Unlocking the Psalms: Part I with Prophet Russ
Prophet Russ offers dynamic insights into Psalms 1-74, enhancing your understanding of this impactful book of the Bible.
About the Book of Psalms
Believed to be compiled around the 4th century BCE, the Book of Psalms served as a prayer book in ancient temples, including Herod’s temple during Jesus’ time. Its title, meaning “instrumental music,” suggests these Psalms were originally lyrics set to music.
Authorship spans from 1440 BC to 538 BC, with contributions from David, Moses, Solomon, the sons of Korah, and others. The original Hebrew title, “Tehillim,” means “praises.” The collection, primarily accompanied by stringed instruments like the harp, lute, and lyre, evolved over many years to its current form.
Structure and Significance
The Psalms are divided into five books in the Hebrew Bible, mirroring the five books of the Torah. These divisions are:
- Genesis Book: Psalms 1-41
- Exodus Book: Psalms 42-72
- Leviticus Book: Psalms 73-89
- Numbers Book: Psalms 90-106
- Deuteronomy Book: Psalms 107-150
Believers use the Psalms for devotional, doctrinal, and prophetic purposes, with 16 Psalms foretelling the life of Jesus. While some interpret the numbering as a calendar or historical almanac, the Psalms remain the longest book in the Bible, with 150 chapters or songs.
