Chapter Five – Kicked into the Kingdom (cont)

“Of course,” he replied. I had a great rapport with management, always did, except the ones who didn’t know God and they were kind of rough around the edges, but that’s ok. Later this one supervisor who wanted me to rip the scripture off of my desk got born again, filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues. Not with my help, I just sowed a seed.
After receiving the offer to be promoted, I’m driving home that night, and I hear the Holy Spirit, and I could hear a lot better because I had been filled with Him. He said, “If you’ll quit your job and go home, I’ll promote you.” I thought, where did that come from? That didn’t make any sense to me at that time, being young in the Spirit. I asked, “What did you just say, Holy Spirit?”

“If you’ll go home and turn down that promotion, I will promote you.” I said, “Ok.” I had a lump in my throat; I was teary driving down the road just minutes to the house. I told my husband when I got to the house, and he wasn’t very thrilled about it because he liked me having a full-time income. But I insisted, “I am going to obey God.” He knew something had shifted because something had changed. So, I said yes to God and thanked the banker for the offer, and gave my two weeks’ notice. I didn’t know how I was going to be able to provide what we needed for the household, but I was thrilled that I was going to get to stay home with my children. I couldn’t put two and two together on how it was going to happen, I just obeyed God first and quit my job.

About 2-3 weeks later, I needed some extra money in the budget because I was going to buy some groceries and there wasn’t enough money to get all the groceries I needed. I went to my bedroom, knelt by my bed to pray. I said, “Father, you told me to quit my job, but I’ve got to have some groceries.” I had no more finished saying that prayer when the doorbell rings out front (I had a big four-bedroom house on a corner lot). I hear the doorbell, opened the door, and it’s two of our best friends from the Baptist Church. They are loaded up with bags and bags of groceries. They said, “God told us to bring you these groceries.” I’m just crying, and I told them about my prayer. The Holy Spirit broke me in so sweetly and so immediately to the things of the Spirit. I could never deny that He is real.

After I got filled with the Spirit and attended that Women’s Aglow meeting, I had the pastor call from the Missionary Baptist Church. I had attended several meetings and was so excited. One of my banker friends told my sister-in-law that she saw me in this Women’s Aglow gathering. The banker was a good friend of my sister-in-law. My sister-in-law called the pastor and reported that I was seen at a Women’s Aglow Conference with my hands raised to heaven, speaking in another tongue. She tells my Missionary Baptist pastor, and he calls me and said he would like to come with a brother so and so the deacon and would like to sit down with you and talk with you and my former spouse. I said, “Sure, come on over.” I didn’t know what it was about and I was so hospitable back then and even now.

The pastor (a former Pentecostal, mind you) and the deacon came over to the house and sat down at the dining room table. He said, “Sister Kitty, you are in heresy according to the Missionary Baptist doctrine. You were seen with your hands raised in a Women’s Aglow meeting, and you were speaking with other tongues. Tongues are of the devil, and you cannot believe that heresy and be part of the Missionary Baptist church. I said, “Well, it’s too late, I’m already filled with the Spirit. It’s too late, I read my own Bible, and I saw where Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, and I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and I feel like I’ve had a shower on the inside of me and I’m not about to give that up.”

They said, “Well, then we will have to exclude you.” I said, “I will say it again, I believe that God can do anything He wants any time He wants. He doesn’t have to check in with anybody.” They were astonished that I spoke so boldly, but I had the confidence of the Holy Ghost on the inside of me. My former spouse was very shy and didn’t want to say anything about it, so he was listening as he was not a confronter and didn’t have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit at that time. The pastor continued, “We will have to exclude you if you won’t relent and say that you were wrong. I said, “Well, I will not deny my Father, and I don’t deny Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

I went on to ask about my spouse who hadn’t received the Holy Spirit yet: “You can exclude me if you want to, but what about my spouse.” They said, “He can still be a member because he was not seen in that position, and you can visit occasionally.” I said, “Ok,” I was happy that he wouldn’t have to lose his place as a member of their church. The very next service was Wednesday night. I was the treasurer for the church because I was a banker and they liked that because I was honest. I took the treasury books back. I was also teaching a Sunday school class because I love children. I took back the materials for the Sunday school, and I was going to turn them in and expected to have our normal service, right? We arrived at service, greeted our friends, and sat down. The pastor gets up and announces, “Before we begin our service tonight, we have some business to take care of. Sister Kitty is found to be in heresy according to the Missionary Baptist doctrine because she believes in the speaking in tongues, miracles, signs, and wonders.
