Chapter Four – Hearing the Audible Voice of God (cont)

The first miracle I experienced as a young boy was resurrection from the dead. When I was about six years of age Mom and Dad were living in Miriam, Kansas which was a suburb of the Kansas City area nestled close to Grandview and Overland Park. My oldest brother was in the final years of elementary school and ran track with the other young athletes at the school. One day the track team was running laps on the field, and they inadvertently ran over a young mother rabbit and her babies. All were killed when they were trodden under except for one baby rabbit who was clinging to life. My brother, Roy Jr., took off his track shoe and put the dying rabbit inside it and took him home. When he arrived, the family was bustling around getting ready for a church service that night. An extended revival was taking place, and the family had been in church every night with no end in sight. Dad met my brother as he came in the door with the wounded creature. All of us boys, along with Mom, gathered around as Dad put the bunny in a shoebox and examined him for signs of life. It seems as though the little creature was almost gone. At the children’s insistence, Dad put a light bulb on a desk lamp close to the bunny to keep him warm, and the family hurried off to service at the Latter Rain church. Hours later, they returned home, and we rushed in to check on the bunny. He was cold and stiff. Dad felt of the little figure and detected rigor mortis had already set in. Before anyone could say a word the boys in unison spoke up: “Pray for him, Daddy! Pray for him like the preacher says and raise him back to life!”

Dad looked down at his anxious little boys and breathed a prayer. “God if you ever wanted an opportunity to impress three little boys with your miracle-working power, here is your chance.” Then Dad prayed and commanded life back into that little bunny. To our amazement and total rejoicing when Dad put the rabbit down after praying for it – it sat up with its whiskers quivering as though it was looking for some clover to eat. The rejoicing was profound. From a clearly dead animal, a miracle had happened to make an indelible impression on my brothers and me. To commemorate the event, we named the bunny Hezekiah like the king whom God gave 15 additional years of life. The rabbit lived and thrived until it was released into the woods a few months later

When I was eleven years old, I began hearing the audible voice of God on a regular basis. I would be playing in the yard or doing homework, and a voice that seemed to come from all around me would speak up and tell me things that were about to happen. In one instance, the voice said: “go outside and stand in the drive – your mother will be home in 10 seconds.” I went out to the drive, and counting to ten greeted mom as she came around the corner into our driveway. This was a regular and ongoing experience for over three years.

When I was just turning 13, the voice of God was speaking to me as strong as ever when a fateful encounter took place. Going through the transition to teenage years, I was struggling in my faith, and one day I told the Lord that I was “going away now” and didn’t want to hear His voice any longer. The Lord replied, “you will regret that decision, but Russ, I will be here when you get back…” That began a long period of time that I descended into captivity, darkness, and drug addiction. There did come a time in my nineteenth year that I rededicated my life to the Lord, but the voice of God didn’t return as it had before. Time passed, and the day came that I was ordained into the ministry with a very close older friend laying hands on me in the ordination service. At that moment, the voice of God returned, and from that time on sounded not audibly but inwardly in my life. Ultimately at the age of 45, the prophetic mantle was activated on me, and life took a radical turn into seeking the kingdom, teaching preaching and prophesying around the world.
