Paul’s Prayer: The Holy Spirit’s Secret Weapon You Are Ignoring:
The Apostle Paul, an extraordinary prayer warrior, consistently demonstrated the integral role of prayer in his life and ministry. While the exact count varies, many sources indicate that Paul’s prayers are mentioned dozens of times throughout his epistles, with some resources listing between 32 and 43 distinct prayers.
Prayer was not merely a ritual for Paul; it was a vibrant, active force. He frequently prayed for:
- Thanksgiving and praise to God.
- The spiritual growth, wisdom, and knowledge of believers.
- Their unity, love, and perseverance.
- Strength and understanding of God’s will.
- His own safety and effective proclamation of the Gospel.
The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
In Ephesians 1:17, Paul offers a particularly profound prayer for believers to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ. He wasn’t praying that people would “fall out in the spirit” or feel waves of goosebumps. These things are often experienced, but don’t necessarily bring about the change that transforms lives. Neither was Paul praying simply for informational or teaching purposes, but in anticipation of the impactful and miraculous power that would accompany such reception. Why? To bring a spiritual outpouring to the lives of the people. Today, we often emphasize zeal and emotional aspects of spiritual growth (emotionalism can only take us so far), but Paul highlights a specific spirit—the spirit of wisdom and revelation. This is more than wisdom or revelation in themselves; it suggests an angelic or divine force, a “spirit of wisdom and revelation” that responds to God’s command to bring understanding to His people concerning the deep things of God. The purpose is to see God’s people mature and walk as “God-men and God-women” in the earth.
Let us pause and pray this same prayer over ourselves:
“O, God of my Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, I ask that You would lavish upon me a profound spirit of wisdom – not just earthly knowledge, but a divine insight that flows directly from Your heart. Let this wisdom enable me to truly understand Your ways, to discern Your perfect will in every circumstance, and to navigate life’s complexities with clarity and purpose, always aligning with Your truth.
And alongside this, I implore You to grant me a powerful spirit of revelation. Tear back the veil, Lord, and reveal Yourself to me in fresh and transformative ways. May I know You more deeply and truly each day, experiencing the intimate fellowship with Christ that surpasses all understanding. Unveil the hidden treasures of Your Word, illuminate the mysteries of Your kingdom, and show me the profound depths of Your love, grace, and power. Open my eyes to Your truth – not just intellectually, but spiritually, so that I may see as You see, believe as You believe, and live a life that glorifies Your holy name. Amen.”
Amen! Now, what does this wisdom and revelation cause you to understand and experience?
Illuminated Understanding and Exceeding Power
In Ephesians 1:18, Paul clarifies the object of his prayer: that the understanding of the people would be illuminated. This tells us that Christians, even those who walk with God, can have their understanding darkened. This darkness can only be addressed not just through teaching, but through prayer and the activation of a spirit—an angel of wisdom and revelation—specifically concerning who Jesus is to us today!
When our understanding of who Jesus is to us is illuminated, what is the result? Is it merely intellectual understanding? No, it is much more. The result of this prayer being answered in our lives causes us (Ephesians 1:19) to know and experience the exceeding greatness of His power. This is not just God’s power in creation, which we already acknowledge, but a very personal application of God’s greatness to us, “upward” as the verse stipulates. In other words, the spirit of revelation causes us to know and experience the personal appropriation and application of the reality of God’s power in our everyday lives to bring change and to empower us for service in the Kingdom. This is the same power (Ephesians 1:19) that God implemented to raise Christ from the dead—the same power intended by an enlightened understanding to raise you out of restriction, limitation, and weakness to empowerment in the kingdom as sons and daughters of the Most High.
This is a power that placed Jesus on the throne at the right hand of the Father and gave Him quintessential power over every created thing, including the principalities and powers that govern creation and fallen humanity. This means that the power in you, activated through wisdom and understanding from God, will change situations and even transform nations! All this occurs because (Ephesians 1:22) the intent of God in His plan for the earth and for His people is to see all things put under His feet, and your cooperation is part of bringing this plan about. God doesn’t need you to bring it about, but He has purposed to involve you in doing so—not through zeal or celebratory spirit, but through wisdom and revelation to see through, and not just at, what is going on around you. Then, we can speak and act as God would have us act in light of what His wisdom and revelation have caused us to understand about His divine plan and our part in it!
Why would God, who doesn’t need our help, involve us in His workings in the earth? Ephesians 1:23 tells us: because the church, His Ecclesia, is (from God’s viewpoint) the fulness of Him that “filleth all in all.” In other words, just as God fills us with His Spirit, we also fill Him. We are the fulness of God’s inner being by His determinate choice. Your life counts for something—in the heavens, on the earth, and in your everyday life. You are not a weakling. You are not a victim. You are victorious in Christ according to His great plan!
Review and Reflection
This exploration of Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:17-23 reveals a profound depth to spiritual growth that extends far beyond mere emotional fervor or intellectual assent. It highlights God’s desire for believers to operate with a supernatural understanding—a wisdom and revelation that not only clarifies His will but also activates His immense power within us. The emphasis on “the spirit of wisdom and revelation” challenges us to seek a divine encounter that transforms our perception and empowers our actions. This isn’t just about knowing about God, but about intimately knowing Him and experiencing the tangible application of His power to overcome limitations and participate in His grand redemptive plan for the world. It shifts our focus from what we can achieve in our own strength to what God can accomplish through us when our understanding is truly illuminated by His Spirit.
Call to Action
- Pray Specifically for Wisdom and Revelation: Make Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:17-19 a daily petition. Ask God for a “spirit of wisdom and revelation” to know Him more intimately and to understand His will for your life and the world around you.
- Diligent Study of God’s Word: While revelation is spiritual, it often comes through a deep engagement with scripture. Search the scriptures daily, asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate truths and reveal Jesus more fully to you. As it is written in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
- Seek Understanding of God’s Power: Reflect on the “exceeding greatness of His power” (Ephesians 1:19) that raised Christ from the dead. Believe that this same power is at work in you to overcome challenges and empower you for kingdom service. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
- Embrace Your Identity in Christ: Recognize that you are not a weakling or a victim, but a victor in Christ, part of the Church which is the “fulness of Him that filleth all in all” (Ephesians 1:23). Your life has divine purpose and significance. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13).
- Act in Alignment with God’s Wisdom: Don’t just receive wisdom and revelation; apply it. Allow what God reveals to you to guide your actions, words, and decisions, knowing that your cooperation is vital in seeing His plan unfold on earth. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22).
Concluding Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the profound truths revealed in Your Word through the Apostle Paul. We pray that You would indeed bestow upon us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, that the eyes of our understanding would be enlightened. May we truly know the hope of Your calling, the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints, and the exceeding greatness of Your power1 to us-ward who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power, which You wrought in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead, and set Him at Your own right hand in the heavenly places.2 Help us, O Lord, to walk worthy of this high calling, to embrace our identity as Your Church, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all. Empower us to bring Your light, Your truth, and Your transforming power into every sphere of influence You have given us, for Your glory alone. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
