Open Your Mouth Wide and I Will Fill It

Are you desperate for answered prayer in some area of your life today? Are you famished for what only God can give you? In Psalm 81:10, the Lord speaks to the heart of the believer with a positive promise:

Psalms 81:10 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

What is the picture here? It is that of a bird feeding her young. She brings a nice juicy worm to the nest, and her blind, featherless nestlings feel the movement in the twigs and up come their necks with their mouths wide open to receive what she has brought to satisfy their hunger. That is the heart of God toward His people. He is not a stingy God, neither is He a withholding God. He wants to bless you.

I remember in prayer one day, and I was speaking to God after a particular manner as though I was making a case for Him to do what I needed Him to do. The Lord interrupted me, saying, “you don’t have to overcome My reluctance to answer your prayer – because I don’t have any.” That was a correction for me. As many today, I had a wrong idea about God’s heart toward answered prayer. Somehow I came to believe that God’s default answer toward me was “no” and that I needed to make a case for Him to hear my cry. Have you ever found yourself thinking like this? Paul, in the book of Romans, gives us the basis of answered prayer:

[Rom 8:32 KJV] 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

What is the premise of the above statement? Paul is saying if God gave us His best gift (Jesus), why would He not give us any lesser thing we need? Paul says that God already set you up for an answer because the wording is “how shall He not WITH Him (Jesus)” do so? In other words, when God gave us Jesus, He gave us every other thing that we might require or ask of Him in prayer. Thus since He gave Jesus 2000 years ago even so He answered the prayer you prayed to Him this morning 2000 years ago. That is what we call the finished work of Calvary.

Notice also in the verse that He gives FREELY. That means undeservedly. You don’t have to qualify to receive an answer. We could never qualify or earn the gift of Jesus, and all prayer is answered on the same basis. Preachers tell us that God always answers prayer, but sometimes He says no. How does that thought measure up against Paul’s statement? If God gave us all things WITH Jesus, then whatever is true about answered prayer is true likewise about Jesus. When a person asks Jesus to come into their heart, does God EVER say “no?” Of course not. Do we earn the gift of salvation in Jesus? No. The scripture tells us while we were yet enemies of God, unlovely and undeserving, Christ died for us.

[Rom 5:6, 8 KJV] 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. … 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This is the scope of God’s love. We can never earn what He freely gives. Receive the undeserved gift of Christ today – and all that accompanies Him. What comes with Jesus? All things you could possibly need in this life and beyond. What if your experience is to the contrary? Your experience doesn’t love you. Your experience didn’t die for you. Believe the good report of the gospel more than you believe what you’ve experienced in the past. Don’t allow your experiences of disappointment to speak louder or with more authority than God’s word. Then you place yourself in the nest, you nestling you. Just open your mouth – like a little baby bird – and receive that juicy, wriggling answer to your prayer today.
