MLToday: [Joshua Chapter Nineteen] What Tribe are You of? In this chapter we see a contrast between Judah and Dan in their inheritance. Judah had too much and Dan had too little. Judah means “Praise” and Dan means “Judgment”. What tribe are you of? If you look around your life and see that you have TOO LITTLE then you are of the tribe of Dan. Dan had to contend for the city of LESHEM in order to get more territory. Let’s study that today for if you are a person who suffers with TOO LITTLE this chapter today will show you how to attain the increase of God in your life.

Today: [Joshua Chapter Nineteen] What Tribe are You of? In this chapter we see a contrast between Judah and Dan in their inheritance. Judah had too much and Dan had too little. Judah means “Praise” and Dan means “Judgment”. What tribe are you of? If you look around your life and see that you have TOO LITTLE then you are of the tribe of Dan. Dan had to contend for the city of LESHEM in order to get more territory. Let’s study that today for if you are a person who suffers with TOO LITTLE this chapter today will show you how to attain the increase of God in your life.
[Jos 19:1-51 KJV] 1 And the second lot came forth to Simeon, [even] for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah. 2 And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, or Sheba, and Moladah, 3 And Hazarshual, and Balah, and Azem, 4 And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah, 5 And Ziklag, and Bethmarcaboth, and Hazarsusah, 6 And Bethlebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages: 7 Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages: 8 And all the villages that [were] round about these cities to Baalathbeer, Ramath of the south. This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. 9 Out of the portion of the children of Judah [was] the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them.
This above reference to the tribe of Judah is mirrored in this chapter by verse 47. The tribe of Judah had TOO MUCH and the tribe of Dan in verse 47 had TOO LITTLE. What can we learn from this? The name Dan means to “judge, to act as judge, to contend and to strive”. Judah means “to praise, give thanks, to laud, to confess the name of God”. Now there are still tribes in spiritual things today. Have you ever met someone from the tribe of Dan? We run into people all the time who are judgmental, harsh, unmerciful and downright mean. They delight to make people uncomfortable. When asked to explain they say “yes that’s my calling! I am PROPHETIC!” Oh really? I might have another word for it! We saw in the previous chapter that when they inquired of the Lord at this time they went to a place called Shiloh which means “peace and tranquility”. That is the environment that the prophet is to provide a people coming to inquire of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 14:3 says that the prophetic INCLUDING THE OFFICE OF THE PROPHET is for edification, exhortation and comfort. There is nothing in the characteristic of a New Testament prophet that justifies being a difficult judgmental person. In Luke 9:54-56 the disciples tried to act like Old Testament prophets and Jesus rebuked them saying “you don’t know what spirit you are of…” He then effectively reconfigured the prophetic but defining it this way: “I didn’t come to destroy but to save…” You won’t find a single New Testament prophet acting like an Old Testament prophet unless he is getting rebuked for doing so. Now in this verse we see that Judah (Praise) that they have too much. In verse 47 we find that Dan (Judge) that they have too little. Now do you want TOO much or TOO little? If you have too little what is the problem? The scriptures are a discerner of the heart according to Hebrews 4:12. If you want to have TOO much then get rid of that judgmental attitude and adopt praise. This gives us light on Matthew 13:12:
[Mat 13:12 KJV] 12 For whosoever hath (Praise), to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not (Judgmentalism), from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Now because Judah had TOO MUCH part of their inheritance was given to Simeon. What does Simeon mean? Simeon means “God hears; to hear and accept what is heard”. Praise God this is speaking of praise. God hears our praise and accepts it. How do we know? Because He gives us TOO MUCH. Having TOO MUCH is a sign that God has HEARD and ACCEPTED our PRAISE. So if you don’t have too much you know now how to put yourself in the position to be a receiver!
10 And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families: and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid: 11 And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that [is] before Jokneam; 12 And turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of Chislothtabor, and then goeth out to Daberath, and goeth up to Japhia, 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittahhepher, to Ittahkazin, and goeth out to Remmonmethoar to Neah; 14 And the border compasseth it on the north side to Hannathon: and the outgoings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthahel: 15 And Kattath, and Nahallal, and Shimron, and Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages. 16 This [is] the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages. 17 [And] the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families. 18 And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem, 19 And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, 20 And Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez, 21 And Remeth, and Engannim, and Enhaddah, and Bethpazzez; 22 And the coast reacheth to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Bethshemesh; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. 23 This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages. 24 And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families. 25 And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph, 26 And Alammelech, and Amad, and Misheal; and reacheth to Carmel westward, and to Shihorlibnath; 27 And turneth toward the sunrising to Bethdagon, and reacheth to Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthahel toward the north side of Bethemek, and Neiel, and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand, 28 And Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, [even] unto great Zidon; 29 And [then] the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib: 30 Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages. 31 This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages. 32 The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, [even] for the children of Naphtali according to their families. 33 And their coast was from Heleph, from Allon to Zaanannim, and Adami, Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum; and the outgoings thereof were at Jordan: 34 And [then] the coast turneth westward to Aznothtabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to Zebulun on the south side, and reacheth to Asher on the west side, and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sunrising. 35 And the fenced cities [are] Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth, 36 And Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor, 37 And Kedesh, and Edrei, and Enhazor, 38 And Iron, and Migdalel, Horem, and Bethanath, and Bethshemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. 39 This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages. 40 [And] the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families. 41 And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh, 42 And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah, 43 And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron, 44 And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath, 45 And Jehud, and Beneberak, and Gathrimmon, 46 And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho. 47 And the coast of the children of Dan went out [too little] for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.
Now if you are pridefully haning on to your membership in the tribe of Dan – HOW IS THAT WORKING FOR YOU? If you maintain your place in the tribe of Dan how would you know it? One way of knowing it is looking around and realizing you have TOO LITTLE. What do we do then? What did the tribe of Dan do? They contended for Leshem. What does Leshem speak to? The word Leshem means “a precious stone” – particularly the stone in the Breastplate that corresponded to Joseph. It was believed that it held special electrical properties and it’s name in ancient times was synonymous with mystery. What is the mystery of the gospel? Col. 1:26 “Christ in you the hope of glory…” If you have the unfortunate experience of seeing something other than the Christ in your fellow man that means you have strayed into the tribe of Dan. The side effect of this is HAVING TOO LITTLE. What is the answer? Strive or contend for LESHEM or “the mystery” of seeing the Christ in those around you. When God looks at you He see the lamb. He wants you to see the lamb in others. To the degree you see the lamb in others determines the extend that you experience the benefit of God seeing the lamb in you. If you don’t see the lamb in others (the lamb that was slain) then you will experience TOO LITTLE even those God sees the lamb when He looks at you. Contend for the mystery and your coast will be enlarged. Get out of the tribe of Dan and choose the tribe of Judah. Dan has no place in the book of Revelation – they are completely left out.
48 This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages. 49 When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them: 50 According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, [even] Timnathserah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein. 51 These [are] the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
The end of the dividing of land was in Shiloh – which means tranquility and peace. When Hebrews teaches us to labor to enter into rest what does that mean? You have to go to the Old Testament here in the book of Joshua to figure that out. You have to get out of the PROBLEM MENTALITY of the WILDERNESS and into the POTENTIAL MENTALITY of the PROMISED LAND. What do you do when you get there? You TAKE THE LAND. What land do you take? That depends of what tribe you are of? Are you of the tribe of Dan? Are you judgmental, critical, always pointing the finger and speaking in terms of “ought” and “should have” where others are concerned? Then you are of the tribe of Dan and your portion is to have TOO LITTLE. But if you move over into PRAISE then you will be of the tribe of JUDAH and have TOO MUCH and get to share it with Simeon because GOD has HEARD you and ACCEPTED your praise!
