The Difference Between Joy and Happiness

Joy Unspeakable: Finding the Lord’s Gladness in Every Circumstance

The world chases happiness like a mirage shimmering on the horizon. We’re bombarded with messages promising fulfillment through fleeting pleasures, material possessions, and achieving that ever-elusive “perfect” life. Yet, even when we grasp those desires, a nagging emptiness often remains. As Christians, we know true, lasting joy isn’t found in the temporary highs and lows of this world, but in something deeper, something unshakeable: the joy of the Lord.1

This joy isn’t dependent on our circumstances. It’s not the giddy excitement of a good day, nor is it absent in the face of sorrow. It’s a deep-rooted contentment, a steadfast assurance, a quiet confidence that transcends the roller coaster of emotions we experience as humans. It’s the peace that passes all understanding, the “joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8).

The Bible is replete with examples of individuals who found joy in the midst of suffering.2 Paul and Silas, imprisoned and chained, sang hymns of praise at midnight (Acts 16:25). Job, stripped of his wealth, health, and family, declared, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15).3 These weren’t fleeting moments of forced cheerfulness; they were expressions of a profound joy rooted in their relationship with God.

This joy is not merely an emotion; it’s a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).4 It’s cultivated through prayer, through dwelling on God’s Word, and through abiding in His presence.5 It’s a gift freely given to those who seek Him with all their heart.

How do we access this joy when life feels anything but joyful?

Firstly, we must shift our focus. When we’re consumed by our problems, our vision narrows, and we lose sight of the bigger picture. We forget the eternal promises, the unwavering love, and the sovereign hand of God orchestrating all things for our good. Psalm 16:11 reminds us, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures6 forevermore.”7 Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), allows us to tap into the source of true joy.8

Secondly, we must choose gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”910 Even in the darkest valleys, there’s always something to be thankful for. Focusing on our blessings, big and small, shifts our perspective and opens our hearts to experience God’s joy.11

Thirdly, we need to cultivate an attitude of surrender. When we relinquish control and surrender our anxieties to God, we make space for His peace and joy to fill us. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.12 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”13

Finally,14 we must remember that joy is a choice. It’s not a passive feeling that washes over us; it’s an active decision to trust God, to praise Him, and to find contentment in Him regardless of our circumstances. Nehemiah 8:10 declares, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”15 Choosing joy strengthens our faith, empowers us to persevere, and radiates God’s love to a world desperately searching for hope.16

This doesn’t mean we deny our pain or pretend everything is perfect. We can grieve, we can weep, we can experience the full spectrum of human emotions. But even in those moments, the underlying current of joy remains. It’s the anchor that keeps us steady in the storm, the light that shines in the darkness, the hope that whispers, “This too shall pass.”

The joy of the Lord isn’t a fleeting emotion; it’s a deep-seated assurance that we are loved, redeemed, and eternally secure in Christ.17 It’s the strength that carries us through trials, the peace that calms our troubled hearts, and the hope that anchors our souls. It’s a gift freely offered to all who seek Him. So let us choose joy, not because life is perfect, but because our God is perfect, and His love endures forever.
