Morning Light – Proverbs 28
ml_2016Today: [Proverbs 28] Are the Alien, Reptilian CIA Agents Really After You? Chapter 28 of our study addresses conspiracy theories, get rich quick schemes and the need for believers to walk in honesty, repentance and confession of sin. There are many delusions that run like veins of ore through the strata of Christian culture. The enemy manipulates many believers with fantastic and delusional conspiracies, get-rich-quick schemes and such like in order to keep us from being effective elements of the kingdom of God. Is this you? Do you know someone like this? Solomon’s words in Prov. 28 ring with a relevance and an authenticity that is most needed in the earth today and in Christian culture.
[Pro 28:1-28 KJV] 1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. 2 For the transgression of a land many [are] the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding [and] knowledge the state [thereof] shall be prolonged. 3 A poor man that oppresseth the poor [is like] a sweeping rain which leaveth no food. 4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them. 5 Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all [things]. 6 Better [is] the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than [he that is] perverse [in his] ways, though he [be] rich. 7 Whoso keepeth the law [is] a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous [men] shameth his father. 8 He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.
In verse 1 we find a biblical perspective on conspiracy theorists. In our society we have many people who put a lot of their time and energy, some obsessively into various conspiracies. From thinking that your neighbors are spying on you to those who believe they were abducted by aliens, conspiracy theories abound all around us. Verse 1 says that the wicked flee when no man pursues but the righteous are bold as a lion. How bold is a lion? A lion isn’t concerned that many eyes might be upon him. The lion is confident and unafraid, knowing that he is equipped to handle whatever comes his way. There are many people who communicate with us sometimes daily who are living lives of quiet desperation that they have elevated to a delusional level of self-importance through conspiracy theories.
There is the woman who declares that she is single handedly squaring off with the federal government, Homeland Security and the demonic prince over America itself when in fact she is simply suffering through a bitter and hurtful foreclosure on a house she foolishly allowed herself to get upside down in with 2nd and 3rd mortgages. She can’t bear to face her own lack of wisdom so she has concocted fantastic schemes of lofty battles in the heavens by which she is changing the course of human history as she is dragged into court and faced with personal bankruptcy and great loss.
There is the handsome young man with two beautiful children who refuses to work for a living or properly care for his children because he believes he is being stalked by reptilian CIA agents who are following him everywhere in black suburbans therefore he cannot possibly work, or live a responsible life because the aliens will get him. Laugh as you will he was discovered when it was found out that he was going everywhere armed with a concealed handgun in case he needed to shoot his way out of a public venue. A pathetic life deluded by self-importance and a refusal to face his own personal demons.
A last example is the woman who moves across the country to stalk a ministry she believes is speaking to her supernaturally directing her actions as she carries out a spiritual, adulterous affair with a catholic priest whom she has never met but insists visits her nightly as she contends in her mind for the fate of the world in delusional trysts with imaginary lovers when in fact she is lonely, miserable and afraid, unable because of pride to look at her problems with honesty and sobriety therefore she takes refuge in fantastic spiritual conspiracies.
We can laugh if we like at such extreme examples but various versions of these fantastic delusions reach far into our culture and many are reported on in the news on a regular basis as though they were fact. The unreal, the fantastic, the supernatural twist our thinking and distract us from the simplicity of faith and the power of prayer. Paul said this:
[1Th 5:6 KJV] 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as [do] others; but let us watch and be sober.
Being sober means not to allow ourselves to be subjected to flights of fancy that make us the laughingstock of the world as the devil does anything necessary to keep us out of our prayer closet.
9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer [shall be] abomination. 10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good [things] in possession. 11 The rich man [is] wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out. 12 When righteous [men] do rejoice, [there is] great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden. 13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh [them] shall have mercy. 14 Happy [is] the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief. 15 [As] a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; [so is] a wicked ruler over the poor people. 16 The prince that wanteth understanding [is] also a great oppressor: [but] he that hateth covetousness shall prolong [his] days. 17 A man that doeth violence to the blood of [any] person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him. 18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but [he that is] perverse [in his] ways shall fall at once.
Verse 13 of our chapter speaks about confessing and forsaking our sin. The doctrine of sin is only marginally present in the theology of our seeker sensitive church culture. The seeker sensitive church takes the position that the people in the pew are consumers of the ministry and the clergy are the producers of the ministry. The marketplace philosophy follows if the people are consumers, or customers then the customer is always right. If the customer is always right then the suggestion that they might sin or being in sin or have sin that needs to be addressed in their lives is completely excluded. Many believe that the mercy of God in Christ makes any reference to sin an antiquarian matter that doesn’t belong in a theology of grace. Is this true? Do Christians sin? If so what is the responsibility of leaders regarding the moral and spiritual failings of the people? Yes God is merciful but notice in verse 13 that it reads that “whoso confesses and forsakes his sins shall have mercy…” If we refuse to search out, confess and actually forsake sin are we still recipients of the mercy of God? Verse 13 of our chapter forces us to pause and think about the cavalier attitudes toward personal holiness that infect church culture today. Are you in sin? Are there areas of disobedience? Then find some accountable person today that you can confess to. If you can’t trust anyone then tell it to Jesus alone. Then forsake that behavior. Those are the conditions that our verse lays out in order for us to be recipients of the mercy of God in Christ.
19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] shall have poverty enough. 20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. 21 To have respect of persons [is] not good: for for a piece of bread [that] man will transgress. 22 He that hasteth to be rich [hath] an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him. 23 He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue. 24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, [It is] no transgression; the same [is] the companion of a destroyer. 25 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. 26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. 27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. 28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.
Verse 19 tells us if we till our land we will have plenty of bread – but if we follow after vain persons we will abound in poverty. There is always someone willing to stand up and say they have all the answers for our life if we will just follow them. It is human nature to make someone else responsible for bringing forth change in our lives. What verse 19 is telling us is that we must make ourselves personally responsible for what we are expecting others to do to work change in our lives. Verse 22 addresses this from another direction: “He that hasteth to be rich has an evil eye and considers not that poverty comes upon him…” What is this speaking about? He that hasteth to be rich speaks about our vulnerability even as believers to succumb to get rich quick schemes. There are 1000’s of believers for instance who have suitcases full of Dinar (Iraqi currency) because they believe that somehow that this currency is going to revalue overnight and make them instant millionaires. These people spend countless hours poring over bulletins and news items believing the false report from those making merchandise of them that “any day now” their fantasy will come true. THIS IS DELUSION and 1000’s of Christians have fallen for it hook, line and sinker. I have seen many Christians also get involved in multi-level marketing schemes who have forsaken all and broken off godly fellowship with any one who doesn’t agree that their get-rich-quick scheme isn’t a God-breathed strategy for the end-time transfer of the wealth.
Can I tell you if you are one of these persons – just repent of your foolishness and move on in God. What verse 19 is saying that if you will sow out in the kingdom and put the resources into giving, and intercession, prayer and seeking the kingdom you would already have walked into your blessing season and seen the breakthrough that you are vainly waiting for with these lies. Just humble yourself to the truth. Are you capable of facing the truth and coming out of the prison house of these idle fantasies? God has something MUCH better for you if you just will.
