Morning Light – June 10th, 2016 Today [Psalm Thirty-Seven]. The Over-arching Favor of God. In this psalm David is consoling a young crippled man who had been taken advantage of. Mephibosheth was Jonathan’s only surviving son. He was crippled and dependent for all of his needs. In the midst of his suffering a trusted person in his life lied about him and took unfair advantage. His fortunes were lost. His life was in jeopardy. David steps in to the situation to encourage this young man and assure him that this situation didn’t take God by surprise and that things were going to work out. Morning Light – June 9th, 2016: Responding to Iniquity, Walking in Love Today [Psalm Thirty-Six]. Responding to Iniquity, Walking in Love. In this chapter David is facing betrayal of the most painful sort. His own father-in-law aids and abets Absolom to overthrow his rule. David laments the wickedness of the wicked while at the same time acknowledging the goodness and mercy of God. When we are assaulted and come against by a fearless and sacrilegious world we tend to turn hateful and hope for judgment of the offenders. David in spite of being wounded and cast down turned instead to the goodness and mercy of God which sustained him in the most difficult circumstances. Morning Light – June 8th, 2016 [Today:] Psalm Thirty-Five: When God Fights for You. In this psalm David is fleeing from king Saul and cries out for deliverance. He asks God to act in his defense and refuses to take matters into his own hands. There will be times in your life when you will face brutal and unkind treatment at the hands of others. You will be lied on and misrepresented. You will be tempted to defend yourself and retaliate against your detractors. This psalm is an example in the life of David of how to traverse the treacherous landscape of personal strife and warfare that we all experience from time to time.
